Home Instructions to Follow Before Surgery
To help ensure a safe procedure and smooth recovery, please carefully follow these instructions before your oral surgery appointment involving IV sedation. If you have any questions or concerns, our team is happy to assist you prior to your visit.
-
Do not eat for at least six hours before your appointment.
You may drink water or a clear sports drink (such as Gatorade) up to two hours before surgery. Nothing by mouth—including water, gum, or mints—within two hours of your appointment. -
Avoid smoking for at least 12 hours prior to surgery.
Reducing or stopping smoking as early as possible before surgery can improve healing and reduce complications. -
Arrange for a responsible adult to accompany you.
An adult must bring you to the office, remain on-site during your procedure, and drive you home afterward. -
Do not drive or operate machinery for 24 hours after anesthesia.
Sedation can affect coordination and judgment even after you feel alert. -
Wear comfortable clothing on the day of surgery.
Choose loose-fitting clothes with sleeves that can be rolled above the elbow, and wear flat, low-heeled shoes. -
Remove contact lenses, jewelry, and dentures before surgery.
These items should be left at home or removed prior to the procedure for safety. -
Avoid cosmetics on the day of surgery.
Please do not wear lipstick, heavy makeup, or nail polish to your appointment. -
Notify our office if you are feeling unwell.
If you develop a cold, sore throat, stomach illness, or other health concern before surgery, please contact us as soon as possible. -
Bring an updated list of medications.
If you take routine medications, bring a current list so our surgical team can review it prior to your procedure.
